Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program
at Massachusetts General Hospital
The innovative collaboration of MGH with the citywide BHCHP
began in the summer of 1985. Boston was one of 19 original
health care for the homeless projects funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and MGH was the sole academic medical
center to support an on-site homeless clinic. The multidisciplinary homeless team has been fully integrated within MGH for over two decades.
BHCHP at MGH strives for continuity and consistency of care for homeless persons predicated upon an enduring relationship
between doctor/clinician and patient. The citywide BHCHP
service delivery model allows doctors and nurses to engage individuals directly on the streets and in the shelters, offering
direct onsite care as well as personalized care in hospital-based ambulatory clinics, specialty clinics, emergency departments, and during inpatient hospitalizations.
